In-depth review: Noir Prism review: a slot played with light

The short version

Noir Prism is a light-beam gem slot from Nocturn Play. Instead of reels, it uses a 6×6 table of 36 crystal tiles. A moon lens fires a beam across the table; mirrors bend it, prisms split it, and every beam pays for the matching gems it lights, multiplied by the setting it leaves through. Rough diamonds fill a gauge that opens the Night of Prisms, a free-cuts bonus with settings that keep doubling up to ×64. Bonus buy: 65× the bet. Top win: 5,000× the bet.

Mathilde's atelier

The game takes place in a gem-cutter's workshop late at night: a grinding wheel on the bench, loose stones in a tray, a red leather wing chair and tall windows over a canal lined with old gabled houses. The moon does the lighting. Your host is Mathilde, a black poodle in a white apron with a jeweller's loupe and a bow in her curls, who holds every good stone up to the light. When a big win lands, the Great Brilliant tears itself off the table and crosses the screen.

How a cut works

Noir Prism cut in progress, the moonbeam split by a prism into two beams lighting rubies and leaving through a ×5 setting

Press Cut. The 36 tiles flip and settle as gems, Brilliants, mirrors, prisms, rough diamonds, loupes or plain velvet. The six settings on the far edge reveal their multipliers, ×1, ×1, ×2, ×3, ×5 and ×10 in a new order each time. Then the moon lens picks a row and fires.

The beam travels in a straight line. A mirror turns it by 90 degrees; a prism splits it into two beams, up to eight in all. Each beam runs from the lens to an edge of the table and pays on its own: three or more identical gems lit by that beam win the prize for 3, 4, 5 or 6+. Different gem groups on one beam add together. The Brilliant counts as every gem on its beam, and three or more Brilliants alone pay as black diamonds.

A beam that exits through a setting multiplies its win by that setting. A beam that leaves by any other edge keeps ×1.

The eight gems

From the top of the paytable: black diamond, ruby, sapphire, padparadscha, garnet, amethyst, citrine and moonstone. The paytable shows each prize for your current bet, per beam, before the setting; during the Night of Prisms the prizes can be very slightly lower.

The Cut gauge and the Night of Prisms

Every rough diamond touched by a beam cuts one facet on the gauge. The gauge keeps its facets from one cut to the next, with a separate gauge for each bet level, and the fourth facet opens the Night of Prisms. Three loupes lit in the same cut open it too.

Noir Prism Night of Prisms in landscape with locked mirrors and doubled settings on the far edge

The Night gives 8 free cuts with two lenses firing each time. Every mirror and prism a beam touches stays in place until the end, so the table gradually becomes a fixed maze of reflections. The settings start doubled, from ×2 to ×20, and double again each time a beam leaves through them, up to ×64. Three loupes lit during the Night add 3 free cuts, up to a total of 30 free cuts.

Buy and play options

The Night of Prisms can be bought for 65× the bet; a bought Night leaves your Cut gauge untouched. Auto cuts can be set to stop when the Night starts. For a slot built on a single, very readable mechanic, see Neon Ronin, and for everything else, the catalogue page.

Frequently asked questions

How does Noir Prism pay?

Each beam pays on its own for 3 or more identical gems it lights, and the win is multiplied by the setting the beam leaves through.

How do you trigger the Night of Prisms?

Fill the Cut gauge with 4 facets by lighting rough diamonds, or light 3 loupes in the same cut. It can also be bought for 65× the bet.

Is the Cut gauge saved between cuts?

Yes. Facets carry over from cut to cut, and each bet level keeps its own gauge.

What is the highest setting multiplier?

×10 in the base game. During the Night of Prisms the settings start doubled and keep doubling, up to ×64.
