In-depth review: Sands of the Mansa review: the arcade coin pusher goes to the Sahel

Anyone who has stood in front of a penny falls machine at the seaside knows the feeling: a shelf of coins hanging over an edge, a pusher sliding back and forth, and the certainty that the next coin will be the one. Sands of the Mansa takes that table, gilds it, and moves it to the Sahel. There are no reels anywhere. You drop gold coins onto a 3D table piled with treasure, and whatever tumbles off the front ledge is yours.

A king, a jeweller's daughter and a caravan master

The table stands under a royal tent at sunset, in front of a city whose banco walls, the mud brick of the Sahel, glow orange against a purple sky. Dunes roll away behind. Mansa was the title of the kings of medieval Mali, a land that grew rich on gold and salt carried across the desert, and the game keeps that story light: just the gold, the salt and the camels.

Three figures watch every coin. In the centre, the Mansa himself sits on his throne in a gold turban and robe. On the left, Sira, a young woman in a dark veil and heavy gold jewellery, lifts a coin into the light each time you win. On the right, Kalifa the caravan master, in an indigo turban, points towards the horizon when his caravan is on its way. You get in through the "Enter the courtyard" button.

How a drop works

Choose your bet, then press "Drop", or tap one of the three slots at the top of the table. Each coin costs one bet. It lands on the pile, the pusher slides forward, and anything that slips off the front ledge pays. A gold coin pays back one bet. The treasures are worth more: the bracelet, the gold bar and the golden rider. Everything that falls during a single drop is added together.

Coins that drop off the sides are simply lost, and they change nothing. And here is the part regulars of real arcades will appreciate: the table never "builds up". Every drop is settled on its own, the same way, whatever the pile looks like, whichever slot you choose and whatever happened on the previous coin. There is no need to feed the machine before it pays. The result is decided on our server the moment you drop; the coins sliding on screen only act it out.

Salt slabs raise the Banco Walls

Salt was as precious as gold on the old caravan routes, and here it acts like it. When a salt slab falls off the front, walls of banco rise on both sides of the table. You get 5 free coins, and while the walls stand nothing can be lost off the sides. Every extra salt slab that falls adds 2 more free coins.

A golden camel calls Kalifa's Caravan

The real event is the golden camel. Push one off the ledge and Kalifa's Caravan arrives: 10 free coins, a bag of gold that Kalifa empties straight onto the table, the walls raised, and five royal carpets unrolled over the five lanes of the front ledge. From left to right they read ×2, ×3, ×5, ×3, ×2. Whatever drops onto a carpet counts two, three or five times, and the ×5 sits in the middle. Salt slabs keep adding 2 free coins each during the Caravan. Above the table, three counters follow the free coins left, the camels (from 0 to 3) and the caravan win.

Three golden camels in the same Caravan bring out the Crown of the Mansa, which is placed on the table. If the Crown falls off the front, it pays a thousand times the bet. It only exists during the Caravan. The win of a single drop is capped, and the game's paytable says so.

Buying the Caravan, autoplay and turbo

The orange "The Caravan" button calls Kalifa at once, with the same 10 free coins, the bag of gold and the carpets. Its cost at your current stake appears on screen before you confirm. Autoplay runs from 5 to 100 drops and can halt when the Caravan starts; turbo shortens the pusher's slide. On a computer, the left panel lists "What pays" in money for your bet, the "In short" tips and your "Last coins".

In our catalogue it sits under New releases and Slots, though there is not a reel in sight. If balls dropping through lanterns appeal more, try Fox Festival, our other "watch it fall" game. Sands of the Mansa is played for free here only; the other 17 Nocturn Play games reach casino operators through SoftAggregator.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sands of the Mansa a slot?

It is listed under Slots and New releases, but it has no reels. It is a 3D coin pusher: you drop coins, the pusher moves, and what falls off the front ledge wins.

Does the table get "ready to pay" if I keep dropping coins?

No. Each drop is settled independently on our server, so the pile, the slot you pick and the previous coins make no difference. You never need to feed the table first.

How do I start Kalifa's Caravan?

Push a golden camel off the front ledge, or buy it with the orange "The Caravan" button. Either way you get 10 free coins and the royal carpets.

What does the Crown of the Mansa pay?

A thousand times your bet if it falls off the front. It only appears during the Caravan, after three golden camels have fallen.

Can I play Sands of the Mansa at a casino?

Not for the moment: it is played for free on nocturnplay.com. Operators interested in the Nocturn Play catalogue can look at our partners page.
