In-depth review: Royal Trail review: Teen Patti 20-20 explained

The short version

Royal Trail is Nocturn Play's Teen Patti 20-20 table. Two hands, Player A and Player B, get three cards each, and you bet on the stronger one under Teen Patti rules. Extra spots cover a Tie, the quality of each hand on its own (Pair Plus A and Pair Plus B) and a 6-Card Bonus that reads all six cards as one poker hand. A round can pay up to 5,000× the table's chip unit.

The room and the host

The table stands in a grand art deco hall: black marble columns veined with white, gold sunburst mouldings, tiered glass sconces and a floor polished to a mirror. Keeping an eye on proceedings is a dapper mongoose in a turban with a ruby clasp and a teal sherwani stitched with gold, twirling his moustache behind a monocle. Wins bloom as a gold lotus over a slowly turning rangoli mandala, and big wins send cards flying in from every edge of the screen.

How a round goes

You get 20 seconds to place chips. Then the shoe deals A, B, A, B, A, B from a freshly shuffled 52-card deck. Player A's hand is turned and named, then Player B's, and the stronger hand wins. Player A and Player B pay the same.

Hands rank from best to worst: Trail (three of a kind), Pure sequence (three in a row, same suit), Sequence, Colour (three of one suit), Pair, then High card. A-K-Q is the best sequence, A-2-3 the second best. Suits never break a tie: when both hands hold exactly the same values, the round is a Tie, the Tie spot wins, and bets on Player A and Player B come back to you.

Pair Plus and the 6-Card Bonus

Pair Plus A and Pair Plus B ignore who wins. They pay on the strength of one hand's own three cards: a Pair pays 1 to 1, and Colour, Sequence, Pure sequence and Trail pay progressively more, with the full ladder shown in the paytable.

The 6-Card Bonus takes all six cards on the table and keeps the best five-card poker hand. Three of a kind pays 7 to 1, four of a kind 100 to 1, a straight flush 200 to 1 and a royal flush 1,000 to 1, with straights, flushes and full houses in between.

Table tools

The chip rack comes with Undo, Clear, Double and Repeat, so a favourite layout can be rebuilt in one tap. The bead road keeps the last results in orange for Player A, teal for Player B and gold for a Tie. Everything fits on a phone held upright.
