In-depth review: The Spindle of the Fates review: a board where destiny keeps spinning

The Spindle of the Fates is played on a round marble board. Four rings of twelve squares circle a golden spindle set in the middle, and twelve rays run from that centre out to the rim. Choose your bet, press "Spin", and all four rings turn together before stopping one by one, innermost first.

Three sisters at the temple

You are in a white-marble temple on a rocky coast at dusk, the sky somewhere between violet and orange. Presiding over the board are the three Fates of Greek myth. Clotho, the youngest, in white and purple robes, spins the thread with a golden distaff. Lachesis wears a blue veil and carries a golden measuring rod; in the game she is the one who sets a ring spinning again. Atropos, the eldest, hides under a purple hood and holds the shears that cut the thread. The "Enter the temple" button takes you in.

Rays instead of paylines

A ray wins when three matching symbols sit along it starting from the centre, on rings one, two and three. If the fourth square, out on the edge, matches as well, the ray pays more: that is "4 in a row". Each ray counts only its best combination, while several winning rays add up. The spindle is the joker. It stands in for everything except the shears and never shows up on the centre ring.

The symbols run from a silver obol stamped with an owl, through the knucklebone, pomegranate, purple shell, laurel wreath, trident, theatre mask, amphora and helmet, up to the lyre at the top.

The Golden Thread on every spin

This is the mechanic that sets the game apart, and it runs in the base game and the bonus alike. Each winning ray pulls a golden thread. Lachesis then spins just one ring again. Any new rays that win after that respin pay multiplied by the number of threads pulled so far: the opening wins pay ×1, later ones ×2, ×3 and upwards. The chain carries on as long as each respin pulls a fresh thread, and ends the moment one comes up empty.

Atropos' Shears: the free spins

Shears only land on the outer ring. Three or more of them start 8 free spins, and every shears symbol beyond the third adds 2 more (four shears give 10, five give 12), to a maximum of 20. At the start of each free spin Atropos cuts the smallest symbol still on the board, the obol first, then the knucklebone, then the pomegranate. Up to three symbols go this way and stay gone, leaving more room for the big ones. Meanwhile the outer ring turns gold and each of its squares carries ×2, ×3, ×5 or ×10, multiplying the win of its ray. The Golden Thread keeps working too, and if all twelve threads are pulled during a single free spin you reach the Great Spindle, which pays the maximum win of the game.

Free spins on a large screen: the golden outer ring marked ×2, ×3 and ×5, spins, cut and shears win counters, and the message Atropos cuts: Pomegranate

Bonus buy and settings

The purple "Atropos' Shears" button buys 8 free spins straight away, at the price the game displays for your chosen bet. Autoplay knows how to stop when the bonus lands, and turbo shortens the ring spins. Results are drawn on our server as soon as the stake goes in; the rings simply show you what was decided.

Released the same afternoon, The Peacock Cube is a jewel cube whose slices twist with every spin. If round boards and multipliers are your thing, Fox Festival is worth a look as well. Casinos get the Spindle through SoftAggregator.

Frequently asked questions

Does The Spindle of the Fates have reels?

No. Our catalogue lists it among Slots and New releases, yet it plays on a circular board of four rings turning around a central spindle.

How does the Golden Thread work?

Every winning ray pulls a golden thread and Lachesis respins a ring. Rays that win after that are multiplied by the number of threads pulled, and it keeps going while new threads appear.

How do I trigger Atropos' Shears?

Three or more shears on the outer ring start the free spins. You can also buy them with the purple button.

What is the maximum win in The Spindle of the Fates?

The Great Spindle: when all twelve golden threads are pulled during one free spin, the game pays its maximum win.
