In-depth review: Neon Ronin review: one fox, one reel at a time

The short version

Neon Ronin is a Nocturn Play video slot built on a 5×3 grid crossed by 20 fixed paylines. Its wild, the Cyber Fox, expands to cover its entire reel whenever it lands. Three or more Holo Scrolls start 10 free spins in which expanded reels stay locked and a win multiplier climbs to ×5. Buying the feature costs 100× your stake, and a single round can pay as much as 5,000× it.

A city that never switches off

The reels float above a wet plaza in a vertical city of screens and towers, all magenta, cyan and violet under a low grey sky. Standing guard is a round-bellied tanuki in black samurai armour edged with neon, a cyan headband and a purple katana at his side. He grins when wilds land and practically leaps out of the frame on a big win. The opening cinematic introduces the rest of the crew: the Ronin, the Kunoichi, the Swordsman and the Onmyoji.

Symbols and lines

The top symbol is the Twin Neon Katanas, followed by the Oni Mask, the Drone Shuriken and the Neon Kabuto helmet. Five glowing crystals in cyan, magenta, amber, lime and violet fill the lower end of the paytable. Wins pay left to right on the 20 fixed lines, three of a kind or more, and only the best win on each line counts. You set one total bet; there is no per-line stake to juggle.

The Cyber Fox wild

Neon Ronin base game with a Cyber Fox wild expanded to fill the third reel and a winning payline

The Cyber Fox stands in for every paying symbol. The moment one lands anywhere on a reel, it stretches to fill all three positions of that reel, so a single fox can touch every line that crosses it. Two or three foxes on different reels can light up a large share of the 20 lines at once, and a full line of five wilds pays the same as five Twin Neon Katanas.

Holo Scrolls and free spins

The Holo Scroll is the scatter. It pays anywhere on the grid, 2× the bet for three, 10× for four and 50× for five, and three or more trigger 10 free spins.

During the feature, every reel that a fox expands on stays wild for the remaining spins. A global win multiplier starts at ×1 and gains +1 for each new wild reel, up to ×5. Once a few reels are locked, each spin starts with a big head start, and the multiplier works on every win that follows. Three more scrolls during the feature add 5 spins.

Buy feature and controls

The Buy Feature button starts the free spins straight away for 100× the bet, with at least three scrolls guaranteed. Autoplay can be set to stop when a bonus triggers. On desktop, hold the space bar for turbo spins; on a phone, tap Spin to hurry the reels along. Every round is capped at 5,000× the bet and ends as soon as that figure is reached.
