Fire on the lava lake

Magma Mayhem is a fish-shooter style game from Nocturn Play set inside a volcano. Instead of fish, the scene fills with creatures of fire and stone: Ember Wisps and Lava Snails at the cheap end, Magma Krakens and the Golden Phoenix at the rich end. Tap where you want the shot to go, or hold to keep firing; shots ricochet off the walls until they strike. Each hit has a chance to capture its target, and the reward is the target's multiplier times your bet. The bigger the creature, the harder it is to bring down and the more it pays, with a single hit topping out at around 2,500× the bet.

The arsenal

Sizzle has three tools, and the price of a shot is the bet times the tool's cost. The rock mortar costs ×1 and hits one target. The freeze cannon costs ×4: it hits a target, spreads to four more and slows the whole lake for three seconds. The drill torpedo costs ×10 and flies in a straight line, piercing up to eight creatures in its path, which makes it ideal when a column of targets lines up. Higher bets upgrade the mortar through three levels, and any shot that touches nothing is handed back.

The eruption gauge

This is what sets Magma Mayhem apart. Every hit heats the volcano, and the gauge on screen shows how close it is to going off. Any hit can set off the eruption; on average it happens about once per full gauge. When it does, meteors rain down on the creatures on screen for free, capturing whatever they land on. You do not pay for those meteors, so a crowded lake at the moment of an eruption is a lovely sight.

Lava Bomb and Chain Charge

Two special targets clear space quickly. The Lava Bomb explodes and takes everything around it. The Chain Charge sends its blast leaping to as many as eight creatures and pays them together as one prize.

Bosses of the crater

When BOSS INCOMING flashes up, roughly every minute, one of three heavyweights crawls out. The Obsidian Scorpion King and the Inferno Wyrm pay a random multiplier on capture. The Molten Golem wears six crust plates; crack them one by one and each cracked plate raises the multiplier of its core. Let any of them cross the screen and it escapes.

Auto and Lock are available, and the game plays in your browser on mobile or desktop. Play Magma Mayhem free on this page, then try the sky islands of Cloud Kingdom Catch or the asteroid belt of Nebula Hunters, or see the whole games page.

Frequently asked questions

What triggers an eruption in Magma Mayhem?

Every hit fills the eruption gauge and can trigger it. When the volcano erupts, free meteors fall on the targets on screen.

Which weapon is best against a line of targets?

The drill torpedo. It costs ten times the bet and pierces up to eight creatures in a straight line.

How do you defeat the Molten Golem?

Crack its six crust plates. Each cracked plate raises the multiplier of its core.

Do missed shots cost anything?

No. A shot that hits nothing is refunded.
