In-depth review: Midnight Yacht: how the dice game really works

Dice poker on the water

Midnight Yacht is a dice game from Nocturn Play based on the classic yacht dice family. You set a bet and press Roll. Five dice land in the tray, the captain keeps the ones that make the best hand and rolls the rest once more, and your final hand is paid from the ladder. There are no decisions to agonise over and no reels: one roll, one re-roll, one result. The top prize is 5,000× the bet.

The faces and the hands

Each pearl die has six nautical emblems: the compass rose, the anchor, the helm, the sextant, the shell and the pearl. Every face is equally likely. Paying hands, from the top of the ladder down, are the Royal Yacht (five compass roses), the Yacht (five of any other emblem), Four of a Kind, Full House and the Grand Tour, which means five different emblems. A pair, two pairs or three of a kind do not pay on their own.

The captain's hold follows a fixed rule that you can read in the help: a Yacht, Full House or Grand Tour is kept whole, four of a kind keeps four dice, three of a kind keeps three, two pairs keep four and a pair keeps two. She then rolls everything else once.

The Golden Die and Polaris stars

Every now and then a sixth die, the Golden Die, joins the second roll. It lands on ×2, ×3, ×5 or ×10, multiplying the hand, or on a Polaris star. Stars light up the night chart on the right, and the game remembers them between rounds, separately for each bet size. Three stars set off the Midnight Cruise.

The Midnight Cruise

The Cruise is a series of seven free rounds, one per harbour, with harbour multipliers of ×1, ×1, ×2, ×2, ×3, ×5 and ×10. Two rules make it special. Any compass rose you roll stays anchored for the rest of the trip, so the dice slowly lean toward a Royal Yacht. And the Golden Die rolls every single time, on ×1, ×2, ×3, ×5 or ×10. Hands in the Cruise are paid from their own prize table, shown in the help, which is then multiplied by the harbour and the Golden Die. A Royal Yacht in the Cruise lifts all the anchors, and a Royal Yacht in the seventh harbour with the Golden Die on ×10 pays the maximum win. The Cruise can also be bought for 65× the bet.
