In-depth review: The Peacock Cube review: a jewel puzzle in a moonlit palace

Forget reels. The Peacock Cube puts a 3×3×3 cube of white marble tiles in the middle of the screen, each tile set with a jewel, and shows you three of its faces: the top, the front and the right. Every face holds nine squares. When you spin, the whole cube turns, then a few of its slices rotate the way they would on a puzzle cube, carrying stones from one face to the next.

The palace and its two keepers

The setting is a Mughal palace late at night. Domes and minarets stand against a full moon, the marble is inlaid with gold, and a still pool mirrors the whole facade. A peacock perches on a golden column beside the cube. Down at its foot sit two characters. A young princess in a deep-blue sari, draped in pearls, holds up a diamond whenever you win. An old jeweller in an orange turban, white-bearded with a monocle, points at the stones with his jeweller's stick. You get in through the "Enter the palace" button.

Bet per face, then choose your faces

Instead of one overall stake, you set a bet per face and then decide how many faces to play. One face means the front. Two means front and right. Three means everything you can see, the top included. What a spin costs is easy to work out: one bet for each face in play, so three faces cost three times your bet per face. Hit "Spin" and let the slices do their thing.

Lines, the white jewel and the full face

Line up three matching jewels on a face you are playing and you win. A face has eight lines to work with: three rows, three columns and the two diagonals, and wins from several lines are added together. The white jewel is the joker and fills in for any stone. Get the same jewel on all nine squares of a played face and you have a "Full face", which pays a big win for the whole face at once.

The stones climb in value from carnelian through pearl, lapis lazuli, ruby, the golden peacock, the dagger and the aigrette (a turban jewel) up to the elephant at the top. The paytable on the left shows what each pays in money at your current bet.

Peacock feathers open the night

Feathers are the exception to the faces rule: they count anywhere on all three visible faces, even if you only play the front. Three feathers start the Peacock Night with 8 spins, four give 10 and five give 12. The spins then play themselves across all three faces, with your total bet split between them. Land three more feathers during the night for 5 extra spins, up to 30 in all.

What makes the night special is the gold inlay. Every square that forms part of a winning line turns gold and keeps its gold until the night ends, riding along with the slices as they turn. A winning line with one gold square pays double; two gold squares make it ×3, three make it ×4. Fill an entire face with gold and it pays out a treasure before going back to plain marble. Get three faces gold at the same moment and the whole cube becomes gold, paying the top win the game allows.

Buying the night, autoplay and turbo

The orange "Peacock Night" button buys the bonus outright with 8 spins; the game shows its price for your current bet. Autoplay can be set to stop as soon as the night begins, and turbo speeds up the cube's turns. The outcome is settled on our server the instant you place the bet; the twisting slices are only there to reveal it.

Frequently asked questions

Is The Peacock Cube a slot?

It sits under Slots and New releases in our catalogue, but there are no reels: you play on the faces of a 3D jewel cube whose slices turn after every spin.

Do I have to play all three faces?

No. You can play one, two or three faces, and only the faces you play pay their lines. Peacock feathers, though, count on all three visible faces whatever you choose.

How do I trigger the Peacock Night?

Land three or more peacock feathers anywhere on the cube, or buy it straight away with the "Peacock Night" button.

What is the maximum win in The Peacock Cube?

It comes when three faces are completely gold at the same time during the Peacock Night: the cube turns to gold and pays the game's maximum win.
