Midnight Yacht: how the dice game really works

Midnight Yacht looks like a simple roll of the dice, and it is, but a few rules shape every session: the captain's hold, the saved Polaris stars and the anchored compass roses of the Cruise.

Midnight Yacht is a casino dice game by Nocturn Play, set on the deck of a luxury yacht at night. Five pearl dice are rolled, the puffin captain keeps the best ones and re-rolls the rest, and the final hand pays from a ladder that tops out with the Royal Yacht, five compass roses. A Golden Die can multiply a hand by up to ×10 or award a Polaris star, three stars start the seven-harbour Midnight Cruise, and the biggest possible win is 5,000× the bet. It is free to play on nocturnplay.com.

One round from start to finish

Set the bet with the plus and minus buttons, then press the red Roll button or the space bar. The captain shakes the cup and five dice tumble into the cream leather tray. The game reads the first roll, the captain sets aside the dice worth keeping, and the others are thrown again once. If the Golden Die joins in, it lands beside the tray. The final hand appears under the dice and, if it pays, the matching line on the ladder lights up with your win.

That is the whole round. It takes a few seconds, less with Turbo on, and Autoplay can run a series of rolls for you and stop when the Cruise begins.

Which hands pay, and why the ladder looks the way it does

Five hands pay. From the bottom: the Grand Tour, five different emblems; the Full House, three of one and two of another; Four of a Kind; the Yacht, five of the same emblem; and the Royal Yacht, which is a Yacht made of compass roses. Smaller combinations such as a pair or three alike win nothing by themselves, but they matter, because they are what the captain builds on for the re-roll.

The ladder on the right of the screen, or above the tray on a phone, shows each prize in cash at your current bet. The Yacht and Royal Yacht are far above the rest, which tells you where the excitement lies: most rolls end with a small hand or nothing, and the occasional five-of-a-kind makes the session.

The captain's hold, explained

You never pick dice yourself. The captain follows the same rule every time. A finished hand (Yacht, Full House or Grand Tour) is kept as it is. With four matching dice, only the odd one goes back in the cup. With three matching, the other two are thrown again. Holding two pairs means a single die is re-thrown, and holding one pair means three dice get another chance. Five dice always make at least a pair or a Grand Tour, so there is always something to keep.

Because the rule is fixed and the dice are fair, there is no strategy to learn on the dice themselves. That is deliberate: Midnight Yacht is built to be relaxing. Your decisions are about the stake and about how you approach the stars.

Polaris stars and what they mean for your bet

The Golden Die does not appear on every roll. When it does, it shows ×2, ×3, ×5 or ×10, multiplying the hand, or a Polaris star. Stars fill the three slots under the night chart. Collect the third and the Midnight Cruise sets sail.

Stars are saved between rounds, and on a player account between visits too, but separately for each bet size. In free play they last for the session. Two stars collected at a stake of 1 stay at that stake. If you switch to 2, you start with whatever stars that stake had. So if you are sitting on two stars, the best way to use them is to keep playing at the same bet. And if you return to the game another day with your account, start at the stake where you left stars behind.

The Midnight Cruise, harbour by harbour

Harbours 1 and 2 (×1). The first rounds set things up. Every compass rose that lands is anchored and stays in the tray for the rest of the Cruise.

Harbours 3 and 4 (×2). Prizes double. The Golden Die rolls in every harbour, so a good hand can be multiplied twice: once by the harbour, once by the die. In the Cruise the Golden Die shows ×1, ×2, ×3, ×5 or ×10 and never a star, and hands are paid from the Cruise prize table shown in the help, which starts lower than the base ladder before the harbour and the die multiply it.

Harbour 5 (×3) and harbour 6 (×5). With a few roses anchored, the dice are now leaning toward the Royal Yacht.

Harbour 7 (×10). The last stop is the big one. Five compass roses at this harbour, paired with a ×10 from the Golden Die, is the jackpot scenario: 5,000× the bet.

One extra rule: if you land a Royal Yacht before the end, all the anchors are lifted and the roses roll freely again. The Cruise total is added to the round that triggered it.

Buying the Cruise

The Cruise button sells the seven harbours for 65× the bet. Your saved stars are not affected. The buy is a shortcut for players who want the Cruise now and accept that a single trip can pay back less than it cost. If your stake is set so that 65 rolls would be a large part of your budget, it is usually better to roll normally and let the stars come.

Who will like Midnight Yacht

It is a natural fit for anyone who enjoys dice games, Yahtzee-style scoring or short rounds with clear results. It also suits players who find slots too busy: one tray, five dice and a ladder are all there is to follow. If you want more going on, the yard-by-yard drive of Gridiron Noir offers a longer game. To roll, open the Midnight Yacht page, or browse the full list of games.

Frequently asked questions

No. The captain always applies the same hold rule and re-rolls the rest once. The dice are fair, with every face equally likely.

Why didn't my three of a kind pay?

Pairs, two pairs and three of a kind are not paying hands. The lowest paying hand is the Grand Tour, five different emblems.

Do Polaris stars carry over?

Yes, between rounds, and between visits on a player account, but separately for each bet size. In free play they last for the session.

What do compass roses do in the Cruise?

They stay anchored in the tray for the rest of the Cruise, until a Royal Yacht lifts the anchors.

How much is the Midnight Cruise to buy?

65× the bet, for all seven harbours.
