Neon Ronin review: one fox, one reel at a time

A tanuki in neon armour, a city soaked in rain and wilds that grow to full height. Here is how Neon Ronin plays, and what to expect from its free spins.

Published 12 October 2026 · Updated 13 October 2026 · Nocturn Play

Neon Ronin is a 5×3 video slot by Nocturn Play with 20 fixed paylines, expanding wilds and free spins in which the wild reels stay locked. The Cyber Fox wild covers its whole reel whenever it appears, the Holo Scroll scatter opens 10 free spins, and inside the feature each new wild reel raises a win multiplier up to ×5. Skipping straight to the feature costs 100× the bet, wins stop at 5,000× the bet, and the slot is free to play on nocturnplay.com.

Cyberpunk with a cuddly edge

Neon Ronin borrows the look of rain-soaked science fiction: towers covered in screens, signs in pink and turquoise, a lone figure on a wet plaza. Then it hands the lead role to a tanuki. He is round, cheerful and very proud of his armour, which glows along every seam, and he carries his katana like someone who has never needed to draw it. The symbols stay in the same world: twin glowing katanas, a demon-faced Oni mask, a shuriken drone, a lit-up kabuto helmet and five neon crystals.

How the base game pays

Choose a total bet and spin. A win needs at least three identical symbols in a row along one of the 20 lines, starting on reel one, and wins on different lines add up. The Twin Neon Katanas pay the most, the violet crystal the least. Holo Scrolls pay on their own, wherever they land: twice the bet for three, ten times for four and fifty times for five.

What an expanding wild changes

On a 20-line grid, a regular wild in one position touches only the lines that pass through that cell. An expanding wild touches every line crossing its reel, which on a 5×3 board is all of them. That is why a Cyber Fox on reel two or three feels so strong: any symbol that lands on reel one now has a full column of support behind it.

Two foxes on neighbouring reels are better still, and five wild reels at once pay as five Twin Neon Katanas on every line. In the base game, the expansion only lasts for the spin it lands on.

The free spins, step by step

Three or more scrolls start the feature with 10 spins and the multiplier at ×1. Here is how a typical run unfolds.

Spins one to three. No foxes yet, a couple of small line wins at ×1.

Spin four. A fox lands on reel three, expands and locks. The multiplier moves to ×2, and from now on reel three is wild on every remaining spin.

Spin six. Another fox appears on reel two. It expands, locks, and the multiplier reaches ×3. With two adjacent wild reels in the middle, anything on reel one that matches reel four pays on several lines.

Spin eight. Three scrolls land: +5 spins, and the scrolls pay too, multiplied.

Spin ten. A fox on reel four makes three locked reels and a ×4 multiplier. The last spins are where the feature earns its keep.

The key point is that early foxes are worth more than late ones, because a reel locked on spin two works for the rest of the feature. The multiplier tops out at ×5, reached on the fourth new wild reel.

Reading the paytable

Open the paytable before your first spin and you will notice it changes with your bet: every prize is already converted into money for the stake you have selected, so there is no mental arithmetic. The free spins column shows what each line pays inside the feature before the multiplier is applied, which helps you picture what a ×4 or ×5 does to an ordinary line of crystals.

Should you use the bonus buy?

For 100× the bet, Buy Feature skips the wait and drops you straight into the free spins with at least three scrolls guaranteed. It suits players who mainly want the locked-reel action and have a bankroll comfortable with that price per attempt. If you prefer longer sessions, playing the base game keeps the cost per spin low and the expanding wilds still give regular moments of excitement. Either way, decide in advance how many buys you are willing to make.

Settings worth knowing

Autoplay can stop by itself when the free spins trigger, so you don't miss the feature. Turbo speeds up the reels; on desktop, holding the space bar does the same, and on a phone you can tap Spin to hurry a round along. The paytable shows values for your current bet in two columns, base game and free spins before the multiplier. If a round reaches 5,000× the bet, it ends there and pays out.

Who it is for

Neon Ronin is a good fit if you like slots with one strong, easy-to-follow mechanic rather than a dozen features competing for attention. Once you have seen a fox fill a reel, you understand the game. For a gentler space-themed slot with doubled free spins, have a look at Purple Galaxy.

You can spin Neon Ronin for free on its game page, or browse more slot machines in the catalogue.
