Mist Dragon review: what happens after the reels stop

Most slots are finished once the reels land. In Mist Dragon, that is when the dragon decides whether to breathe fire. Rules, bonuses and jackpots explained.

Published 4 October 2026 · Updated 5 October 2026 · Nocturn Play

Mist Dragon is a 5×3 line slot by Nocturn Play with 10, 20 or 30 lines, set in a Chinese temple guarded by a great red dragon. After a spin, the dragon can breathe fire to create wilds, upgrade symbols or light a prize pearl; dragon pearls trigger free spins with a heat multiplier up to ×5, and six jade coins start a Hold & Win style Pearl bonus with four fixed jackpots, the Grand being 1,000× the bet. Released on 3 October 2026, it pays up to 5,000× and is free to play on nocturnplay.com.

Temple, lanterns and a full moon

The backdrop is a hillside temple under a full moon, red lanterns swaying in the mist. The dragon itself curls beside the reels, and it is not decoration: it reacts to every spin. The paytable mixes warriors and beasts (the dragon warrior, a phoenix of fire, a tiger) with treasures and objects: a bowl of gold carved from jade, a sabre, a golden koi, a fan, a red lantern.

Fire after the spin

When the reels have settled, the dragon can step in. Its breath does one of four things:

  • turns some symbols into wild dragons;
  • turns symbols into one and the same premium symbol;
  • sets a whole reel on fire;
  • lights a pearl that carries a prize.

A spin that looked empty can become a win in that last second, which is the signature moment of the game.

Dragon's Breath: the free spins

Dragon pearls are the scatter. Three, four or five anywhere pay and award 8, 12 or 16 free spins respectively. If two pearls are showing, the dragon may light a third to complete the set. In the bonus, the fire comes much more often, and each blast raises the heat, which multiplies line wins from ×1 up to ×5.

Jade coins and fixed jackpots

A separate feature, the Pearl bonus, needs at least six jade coins on screen. The coins lock in place and you get three respins; every new coin that lands resets the count to three. Four jackpots are attached, and they are fixed multiples of your bet, not progressive pools: Mini 10×, Minor 25×, Major 100×, Grand 1,000×. Covering all 15 positions wins the Grand.

Watching a Pearl bonus play out

Bet of 2 dollars, 20 lines. A spin lands six jade coins, enough to start. They lock; three respins. The first respin brings two more coins, so the count goes back to three. Then a blank, then another coin, reset again. With nine coins on the 15 positions, the remaining spaces get harder to fill, and after two blanks and one last coin the counter runs out at twelve. You collect the values on the coins; a complete screen would have meant the Grand at 2,000 dollars.

Who it is made for

Mist Dragon suits players who like Asian-themed slots with several ways to get paid: line hits in the base game, a free-spins mode with a climbing multiplier, and a coin feature with jackpots of known value. Since there is no bonus buy, everything comes from regular spins, and the after-spin fire keeps those regular spins from feeling flat. Choose a line count, keep the stake steady, and let autoplay or fast mode carry the base game if you want to reach the features faster.

Compared with other Asian Hold & Win slots

Players who know Aristocrat's Dragon Link family, or the many "hold and spin" games with Mini to Grand ladders, will feel at home in the Pearl bonus. The difference is the dragon's fire after each spin, which those games don't have, and the free spins with a heat multiplier on top. For another take on Hold & Win, see our Golden Abysses review, where the jackpots are earned row by row.

Playing on a phone

Turned sideways, the phone shows the dragon coiled next to the reels just like on a desktop. Upright, the reels move to the centre and the jackpots sit above them. No download, it runs in the browser.
