Leviathan Gold: a player's guide to the reef

Fish shooting games reward a bit of thinking about what you fire at and with what. Here is how Leviathan Gold works, and a few habits that make a session last longer and feel better.

Leviathan Gold is a fish shooting game by Nocturn Play set in a sunken city. You control a golden cannon at the bottom of the screen and fire at sea creatures that swim past, each worth a fixed multiplier of your bet per shot, from 2× for a silver minnow up to 300× for the Golden Dragon boss. There are three weapons, two special creatures that take others down with them, and two bosses. Wins are capped at 2,000× the bet for any one hit, and the game can be played free on nocturnplay.com.

The basics in one minute

Set your bet per shot with the minus and plus buttons around the cannon. Tap anywhere on the water to fire once, or hold to keep firing; on a computer, the space bar fires too. Each cannon shot costs one bet. When a shot hits a creature, the game decides whether it is caught. If it is, you win its multiplier times your bet, coins fly to your balance and the diver mascot in the corner celebrates. If not, the creature swims on and you can try again.

The key thing to understand is that a bigger creature pays more but is harder to land. A clownfish at 3× falls easily; a night manta at 50× may need many hits. Over time the reef balances out, so there is no secret target that pays better than the rest. What you can control is how you spend your shots.

Choosing your weapon

Cannon (1 bet). One shot, one creature. Shots bounce off the walls until they hit, so nothing is wasted on empty water. It is the right tool most of the time, especially for single big targets like the shark or the manta.

Laser (5 bets). A beam that passes through the creatures on its line, up to twenty of them. It pays off when a row of fish lines up, for instance during a fish tide when a school crosses in formation. If the beam only touches a couple of cheap fish, the game charges you less than five bets, so firing it into a sparse area is not a disaster, just not very useful.

Bomb (15 bets). Tap a creature and the explosion catches everything around it, up to thirty creatures. Use it on dense clusters. If there is nothing in range, you get the bomb back, and like the laser it costs less when the creatures reached are worth less than the full price.

Targets worth knowing

The Thunder Jelly pays 30× and, when caught, sends chain lightning to up to five creatures nearby, paying for each of them as well. The Blast Pearl pays 25× and blows up to eight creatures around it. Neither of them pulls in a boss or another special creature. Both are worth a cannon shot when they swim through a crowd, because their value grows with the number of fish around them.

The lantern angler (25×) and the crimson octopus (30×) are armoured. Occasionally a catch on one of them becomes a SUPER ×5, turning the angler into 125× and the octopus into 150×. Treasure chests are another favourite: they open for 60×, 88×, 128× or 188×.

Boss fights, step by step

Every so often during play, a warning sign flashes and a boss enters: the Golden Dragon and the Kraken take turns.

1. The warning gives you a moment to decide. If you are low on balance, simply keep firing at small fish; you do not have to engage.

2. Switch on LOCK if you want every shot to home in on the boss. LOCK always picks the most valuable creature on screen, which will be the boss.

3. Each hit has a chance to catch it. When it falls, a golden wheel spins to set its value: 100× to 300× for the dragon, 80× to 250× for the Kraken.

4. If the boss escapes off screen, nothing is lost beyond the shots you fired. Another will come later.

Sizing your bet per shot

Because you fire many times per minute, the bet per shot is the number that matters for your budget, not the size of any one win. A useful rule is to divide your session budget by a few hundred and pick the nearest bet. That leaves room for a dry spell between bosses. Remember that the laser and bomb multiply your stake by five and fifteen: three bombs at a high bet can cost as much as fifty cannon shots.

AUTO keeps firing for you, which is relaxing but fast on the balance; pair it with LOCK so the shots at least go somewhere useful. And use the free version to get a feel for the rhythm of fish tides and bosses before playing for real.

Phones, tablets and who it suits

Leviathan Gold is designed for a wide screen. On a phone it plays in landscape and politely asks you to rotate when you hold it upright. Tablets and computers show the full city, with Neptune-style statues and coral framing the action.

It suits players who want something more hands-on than a slot: you choose where to shoot, when to spend on a laser and whether to chase a boss. If you would rather sit back and watch the reels, our fishing slot Golden Abysses covers the same depths in a calmer way. Frequently asked questions

Is there a best fish to shoot in Leviathan Gold?

No creature pays better on average than another; bigger ones are simply worth more and harder to catch. The real choices are which weapon to use and when.

When should I use the laser?

When several creatures line up, typically during a fish tide. It costs 5 bets, or less if what it hits is worth less than that.

What is SUPER ×5?

A bonus that can trigger when you catch the armoured lantern angler or crimson octopus: their multiplier is multiplied by five.

What is the maximum win per shot?

One impact can pay up to 2,000× the bet per shot.

Can I play it on my phone?

Yes, in landscape. Hold the phone sideways and the whole reef fits the screen.
